How Much Does The Brady Campaign Hate The NRA?

It always amazes me when gun-ban advocates put their hatred of the nearly 5 million law-abiding members of the National Rifle Association ahead of everything else. In the most recent example, gun-haters have elevated their disdain for NRA ahead of the lives of American troops serving within the United States.

I find that despicable. Here’s the story.

Last week, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence directed the state’s military bases and training centers to beef up security in response to the recent attacks on military installations in Chattanooga, Tenn. In conjunction with the order, Pence turned to the world’s foremost authority on firearms training—the world-class training programs and trainers of the National Rifle Association.

Even I wouldn’t have guessed that upon hearing the announcement, gun-ban advocates like the Brady Campaign would put politics above the lives of our brave men and women in uniform. Instead of embracing firearm training (which they would if they really cared about “gun safety”), Brady leaders criticized Gov. Pence for working with NRA to provide the guardsmen with free materials, training and facilities.

Dan Gross, Brady Campaign president, flippantly said: “There is no institution better equipped to train our service men and women than the U.S. military itself. This is not a job for lobbyists.”

Let me be perfectly clear here: When it comes to lobbying Congress and state legislatures for the preservation of our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action is second to none. In fact, the hard, savvy work of NRA-ILA is one of the main reasons we are all able to practice the rights we currently enjoy today.

But NRA is far more than just lobbyists: The Association trains more Americans in the safe use of firearms than anybody, anywhere. In fact, the Association was founded on the principles of marksmanship, and has continued till this day to teach firearm competency and safety to civilians through a network of over 120,000 certified instructors. No other organization in the world does more than the NRA to educate people on the safe and responsible use of firearms—no matter what Gross wants to insinuate.

Not only does NRA instruct civilians, it also trains law enforcement personnel. More than 65,000 law enforcement instructors have gone through NRA training programs, and there are currently more than 13,000 active instructors specifically in law enforcement.

Fact is, it’s not NRA that turns every conversation about firearms into some kind of political debate; it’s those who wish to curtail our Second Amendment rights. In this case, Indiana guardsmen are quite fortunate to have well-qualified NRA instructors capably assisting them with their advanced training. Even the Brady Campaign should realize that’s a good thing.
